Fool Yourself Or Accept Your Ignorance

I could not count how many times I have been frustrated with services and mass transportation in the Philippines. However, in a sense I became to appreciate to this country for making me realize how prosperous my country is, which I could not see if I don't live in a developing country.

And also, living abroad gives me different perspectives and some awareness about what is happening outside of Japan.

People are basically ignorant. I think whether we make our lives more meaningful depends on the degree in which we allow ourselves to be exposed to ignorance; an escape from our comfort zone.

As one of my favorite quotes, "Unexamined life is not worth living" said Socrates. If I had not made up my mind to study abroad, I could not have agreed with this.

I believe that skills that people have is one of the most significant element that is shaping their lives, which a lot of Japanese people probably have yet realized.

The acquisition of any skills is also the course to know who you are and where you want to go.

With the lasting recession in which the fresh graduates have a hard time to find a job, a lot of Japanese college students probably preoccupy themselves with anxiety towards a job interview that awaits them, which they could not avoid no matter what.

I dropped by a bookstore during my temporary stay in Japan. Overwhelmed because there were so many books on how to go through "Syukatsu" (The activity from applying for a job to getting a job offer) ranging from appropriate manners and responses upon a job interview to what kind of corporate attire favorable for each industry.

I know that the Japanese in general feel more secure when things are systematized and manualized but I have found this too much.

Behind this fact, I feel like I was able to foresee why those books are published. Companies might also earn money by providing some information to publishing companies, which might be about what type of applicants are likable for them. I think that, in a good sense, this is win-win relationship.

A college student who reads one of the books would try to be a favorable applicant for a company where she wants to work.

How can she make a difference? Where is her individuality?

Syukatsu, in fact, also reflects what the Japanese society looks like. Unless you get out of your comfort zone, you would never know how other people think about you and your society.

"I know myself better than any other people!". Is that really so? However, that kind of way of thinking probably makes you totally blind especially towards your weaknesses, which you don't want to be pointed out, and makes you close-minded.

For The Sake Of Good Governance

The economic growth in the Philippines now slows down in spite of the highest rate remarked in 2013. On of the factors lowering the entire economy that can be considered, according to BizNews Asia issued on September 21, is agriculture.

The Philippines is supposed to be the land of abundant of rice but, to the point that the government has decided to import rice, the lasting El Nino phenomenon is a bane of the entire country.

The economy in Vietnam is also on the rise following the Philippines. In short, Vietnam is becoming more competitive more than ever before, which explains that the country might take over the position where the Philippines is ranked 5th in terms of the least competitive among the five major ASEAN countries.

In order for the Philippines not to let it happen and propel for its further prosperity, the nation needs to pull up its current economic growth at least up to 6.0 % next year.

Therefore, the 2016 election is really critical, which decides the next head of the nation.

The popularity of President Aquino still remains high. Hence, the Filipinos want a successor of Aquino who never causes any scandals unlike Joseph Estrada and Macapagal Arroyo.

However, there are still a lot of problems that could not be sorted out during his term, which, the Filipinos believe, could be done by the next president.

With the presidential system, each one of the Filipinos has a big responsibility to select the future president, which also determine their own future. Their voting decisions could take over fruit borne by Aquino or could destroy it easily.

For the coming election which decides the fate of the Philippines, the Filipinos have to remember four most important elements for good governance.

That is 4C (source: BizNews Asia)

  • Competitiveness (競争)
  • Corruption (汚職)
  • Competence (能力)
  • Climate issue (気候問題)
I will try to contemplate these four elements raising the current problems which should be sorted out as quickly as possible.

According to BizNews Asia issued on October 18, the Philippines has yet wiped out its disgraced reputations:

  • Worst mass transit in the world (世界で最低の交通機関)
  • Worst traffic in the world (世界で最低の渋滞)
  • Worst airport in the world (世界で最低の空港)
As you know, infrastructure in the country is explicitly pretty poor, which sets itself apart from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, in terms of global competitiveness.

Political dynasty, which has been deeply rooted in the Philippines, is always brought up in discussions.

Political families still dominate the entire political arena despite the prohibition of political dynasty as stated in Article II Section 26.

Considering the fact, I cannot help thinking that that matter is at least related to corruption in the country.

In the eyes of a foreigner, President Aquino doesn't seem to put a lot of efforts to reduce the corruption. Is that because he is also from a political family?

English competency in the Philippines can never be beaten by any other ASEAN countries. hence, the operation of businesses here must be easier and more comfortable for foreign businessmen.

However, in reality so many red tapes hinder them from doing business.

One of the examples is, in reference to an article of the Philippines Star issued on October 19, that the Philippines has most tedious tax payment.

It takes 193 hours for a businessman to pay 36 kinds of fees and taxes per year!

The Philippines is ranked 127th among 189 countries, which is surprisingly lower than Iran and Iraq.

For your reference, Thailand is ranked 62th, and Malaysia is ranked 32th (source: PwC).

This issue tells you, that in order to utilize the competency which the Filipinos possess, a suitable environment that maximizes it is rather essential.

The Philippines is no.5 most affected by disasters in the world. To minimize the damages, as I stated already, infrastructure is critical.

In fact, a lot of things can be done beforehand but "Bahala na" mentality, which is a Filipino expression that kind of means "Come what may", is also one of the factors hindering the country from contemplating any consequences.

Lastly, I don't think having high expectations for the government and the next president is a wise idea. The Philippines is a democratic country, meaning, the people are the ones who shape a country

The problems that I raised here might be solved with the improvement of attitude of each one of the Filipinos.

Why does corruption happen? Why is infrastructure in the Philippines delayed?

The answer is very simple.

I hope the next election will be milestone for the Filipinos, including politicians, to contemplate what has to be changed.

After President Aquino: The Future of the Philippines

With the high rate of the economic growth, the Philippines has been progressive in the past few years.

A lot of Japanese who visited the country during 1980s, which is considered "Bubble Economy Era" in Japan, would be amazed with the number of modernized buildings and luxury condos when they visit here again.

The purpose of going to the Philippines might have been shifted from personal pleasures to the interest in the country itself.

According to BizNews Asia, issued September 14, 2015, it says that, 'the Philippines is No.1 in marine biodiversity, in seafarers and sailors, call centers, and maybe musicians.

We are No.2 in business processing outsourcing. We have the third largest coastline.

We are fourth in the world in gold and shipbuilding, and fifth in all other mineral resources.

We are No.12 in human resources, and the Filipino expatriates are the preferred employees elsewhere in the world.

However, the Philippines is prone to be acknowledged as one of the most corrupted countries in spite of those blessings of nature and honors.

President Aquino has manifested anti corruption but, as the Filipinos know, it really dies hard.

In my opinion, the Philippines should focus more on what they have to improve after President Aquino's term, which is 2016.

Felino Palafox Jr. in the said magazine proposes that, in order for the Philippines to take a leap, five factors could be attributed to its further transformation:

  • Visionary leadership (目に見えるリーダシップ)
  • Political ills
  • Good planning (計画的)
  • Good design (しっかりとした骨組み)
  • Good governance (良い政治)
The dispute with China has been a big concern in the Philippines. Based on the article "View of Territorial Disputes with China" from The Economist, issued September 18, 2015, about 95% of the Filipinos, which is ranked 1st in the countries in Asian-Pasific region are concerned about the Territorial Issue. (the source: http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2015/09/daily-chart-14?fsrc=circ%7Ccnt%7Cfbasiasf)

On the other hand, Japan is ranked 2nd, which explains that Japan and the Philippines are now in the same boat.

Considering the approval of the security bill, Japan has made a good move to prepare itself to fight against China.

However, this should not be offensive fight but defensive fight.

I think the Philippines could strengthen its tie with Japan even more than before as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has committed to make a change for our friendly nations and, of course for our nation.

I don't know exactly what will happen to the Philippines in the future, but I believe that this nation could get back the glory when the country was once leading ahead in Asia from 1900s to 1970s.

And, no one can call them "Sick man of Asia" anymore.

Remarkable Effects of Calamansi

Calamansi, which is one of the most consumable ingredients in the Philippines, actually has more nutrients than lemon and lime that are considered rich in Vitamin C.

Aside from Vitamin C, calamansi contains more minerals than lemon; around 5 times as much as calcium, three times as much magnesium, and twice as much iron as lemon.

And, the most remarkable thing is that this ingredient has 8 times as much Vitamin C as Shi-ku-wa-sa (Ctrius depressa), which grows and is harvested in Okinawa, Japan.

How does calamansi bring health benefits for our body?

  1. Avoids body fat accumulations.
  2. Increases metabolism.
  3. Protects skin from stress and ultraviolet rays and rejuvenates skin.
  4. Adjusts cholesterol levels.
  5. Avoids catching colds.
Calamansi is inexpensive albeit its abundant nutrients. You can buy a lot at around 30 pesos. The Filipinos add some to salad, fish, chicken, pork and drinks.

Recently, I have been drinking hot calamansi water everyday. This drink is very simple! I just squeeze one or two calamansi and put the juice into a glass of hot water.

I have noticed that I have less pimples on my face than before and I feel like my skin looks shiny!

Souvenirs always draws tourists' attentions but it is also good to enjoy travelling to pay attention to local ingredients that are not available in your country.

Junk Food is basically considered unhealthy because it has high calories, saturated fat, and sodium. Eating too much will definitely affect our body, causing health problems ranging from digestive problems to life-threatening diseases.

A lot of people already know that fact but even so, when they see junk food at a store, they can't help but put some into a basket.

I am not a super-health-conscious person so I eat the local snacks ( Filipino snacks) sometimes. I have tried different types of snacks so far, most of which are really tasty and similar to Japanese snacks.

I will pick my top 5 favorite Filipino snacks and introduce them here.

1. Cracklings in Old Fashioned Salt & Vinegar

This is the one I love the most among my favorites so far. The square snack has a crunchy  texture and is flavored by vinegar. When you put one on the tongue, you can taste the strong sourness which spreads through your whole mouth. Because it has the plenty of air within, this snack may satisfy your appetite. But, I might not recommend this one for those who don't like very sour things.

2. Boy Bawang

Bawang means garlic in Tagalog. This garlicky snack is made from corn and comes in a variety of flavors, like barbecue, cheese, and even ones derived from the local dishes such as adobo and lechon chicken. The Filipinos often say that this snack is a great match for beer. You can also enjoy it as an appetizer as well.

3. Ding Dong

This snack is a mix of different kinds of nuts and rice crackers. We also have similar snacks to this in Japan. You will definitely enjoy it with beer, like Boy Bawang!

4. Cheese Ring

This Ring-shaped snack is cheesy and puffy. The taste is exactly the same as the Japanese snack, Ka-ru (カール). I like this snack very much but I don't like the package because it is printed with a creepy character.

5. Sweet Corn

This ball-shaped snack is corn-flavored and very puffy.. Sweetness is also added. You can never be tired of the light taste.

I hope you guys get some idea of the Filipino snacks I introduced.

Love or Money

According to a survey conducted last February, which asked the Filipinos nationwide which person was more attractive; one who is good-looking but has no sense of humor, or one who is ugly but has a sense of humor, it shows that about 90% of the Filipinos prefer the latter.

Filipinos in general like to say jokes, which even may sound corny, saying "joke lang!". On another point, some might do so to shake off their shyness.

I think that the people here, basically, are optimistic, they are able to turn even gloomy situations into cheerful ones. I think that is what the Japanese lack in and what we have to learn from the Filipinos most.

Of course, we have similar surveys on romantic interests in Japan. And the one I often see is like this; a person who is ugly but has much money or one who is handsome but has no money. I feel like that this survey is more likely to reveal which one is better, not which one is more attractive.

However, it gives us some idea about what the Japanese weigh on in choosing partners.

This kind of survey tells us something about the cultural background and the current situations of each country.

The rapid economic growth in the Philippines has been raising the number of middle-class families but even so, in reality, a lot of Filipinos are still suffering from continuing poverty. A fact that Filipinos living the above average life are also very aware of it.

Because of this factor, the Filipinos don't try to think that love can be measured with money alone, whereas the Japanese tend to think of love in more materialistic ways.

Sometimes, such a thinking makes it difficult for the Japanese, especially men, to put all of their hearts into romantic relationships.

For instance concern like,  "what if I can't buy things my girlfriend wants? "It's not worth using money for my girlfriend", all of which keeps them from dating with someone else.

I think that that is the difference between a developing country and developed one.

"Love or Money", these are always brought up for discussion and have never been solved. If we say love is more important than money, it sounds like we are hypocrites.

And if we say money is more important than love , it sounds like we are gold diggers.
Consequently, maybe both are important for us.

My Recent Frustration with a Service in the Philippines

Lack of staff at the immigration of Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3 caused a long queue last week, which took passengers more than an hour to pass through there.

As a result, 29 passengers missed their flights that were supposed to fly with them to Hong Kong and Singapore respectively.

In addition to the staff shortages, the traffic nearby the airport has been getting worse due to the construction and road-paving.

To be honest, I have been frustrated with the services at the airport. Last time I used it is this May, and it was my first time to used terminal 3.

My first impression to the terminal was pretty good because it looked cleaner and much better than terminal 2, which I was frequently using before.

Even so, I will write down here about my recent frustration in terminal 3.

Having done with my baggage screening and check-in, I proceeded to the immigration counter. As far as I remember, there were 6 immigration staff at that time.

When I showed my passport at a window, I was asked to go to the window for ACR I-card holder and pay for the re-entry fee.

And, as I tried to go back to the window where I showed my passport, all of a sudden, the staff closed the window without any explanation or notification, and pointed his finger to the next window.

I found this kind of rude. A foreign couple in front of me seemed very frustrated with it saying "they should not close the window!" in an angry tone. In fact, 2 out of 6 suddenly left the counter.

In my opinion, as long as there are passengers falling in line and waiting for the immigration process, they should neither close a window nor leave the counter. Or, at least they should announce to passengers in a polite manner in leaving urgently.

Since the Philippine government has been busy with infrastructure including the construction around the airport ( or maybe busy with corruption?), I don't think they are going to do something about this matter.

But, they also need to focus on something more radical, such as service improvements and people's attitude, coinciding with infrastructure.

My Journey to English Mastery

The 2020 Olympics that will be held in Tokyo seems to spur the Japanese to English proficiency.

From language schools and online schools to various English textbooks at bookstores, we Japanese have a lot of English-learning materials and plenty of opportunity.

The number of English learners in Japan, in the past few years, has been drastically increasing in response to the sensation, but of those people, how many are actually adept in the language, ranging from conversational skill to formal speaking skill. I think it is very few.

In my case, I have been eager to keep studying English since I made up my mind to enroll at a university in the Philippines.

I have tried as many English-learning methods as possible to find one that is suitable for me.

Sometimes, I desperately felt frustrated when those methods didn't work for me, and I saw so many corrections on a written exam in English, which utterly discouraged me from studying English further.

That is because, I can see myself beck then, I was craving for the instant gratification.

Until I realized that, I had been quite defensive and emotional, making excuses, which might be considered a form of defense mechanism, when someone pointed out mistakes in my English.

Some people are prone to take it personally when being severely corrected by someone.

Ashamed, I used to be one of them. However, I came to realize that I could never endure learning English in the sate of mind in which emotion overpowers reason.

Starting to blame our poor English performance on textbooks that we bought at a bookstore, we question, "Why did we want to study English in the first place?".

Language mastery seems to challenge us. Rather, learning challenges our emotional aptitude, testing our patience, delaying gratification, and self-control; it is not all about linguistic competence.

To be honest, I am not in an environment surrounded by 100 % English speakers.

That is why I am little bit envious of Japanese students who study in a native English speaking country, such as America, England, and Australia, which are the most popular destinations for English learning.

However, I still want to prove to those people that I can understand and use English, even if I study in the Philippines.

This is good motivation to propel me forward in learning English.

My story aside, motivation is also the key to English mastery.

My journey to English mastery is still ongoing.

Positive and Negative results of the American occupation

Emilio Aguinaldo, one of the revolutionaries as well as the first president of the Philippines, declared the Philippines independence from Spain on June 12, 1898, which resulted in the end of the Spanish colonization that lasted for almost 300 years.

However, the Filipinos would never expect that the independence was actually the start of the American occupation, although America joined the Philippines' side to aid them to be independent.

After the surrender of Spain, the Philippines was bought for $ 20,000,000 by America in accordance with Treaty of Paris. The Filipinos strongly resented the betrayal of America, which brought them to Philippine - American War (1898 - 1902).

The war caused over 4,000 causalities in the American side, and 1.5 million causalities in the Philippines' side, including its civilians. Since American troops massacred Filipino rebels who were against America and claimed for the independence,

the number of Filipino causalities considerably increased. "KILL EVERY ONE OVER TEN", which was the caption in the New York Journal cartoon, affirmed that the massacre actually happened.

After the capture of Emilio Aguinaldo, the Philippines were colonized by America in 1902.

A lot of things are done during the American occupation, some of which brought some benefits to the Philippines and some didn't, rather caused some confusions.

Positive results:

  1. Progress in Education (教育の促進)
  2. Public Health and Welfare
  3. Transportation and Communication (交通と電話)
  4. Literature and Language (文学と言語)
I would like just to focus on no. 1 and 2 this time. Some people are wondering why the Filipinos can speak English. Here is the brief answer: "because of the American occupation".

The Filipinos during the Spanish colonization were encouraged to learn Spanish language and Christianity which was compulsory.

But, America, conversely, discourage them from learning the language in favor of English, and made the subject related to the religion optional.

Government examinations were even conducted in English, thus, the language became critical in all schools, which today explains why English is understood throughout the Philippines.

Negative results:

  1. A replacement Filipino goods with American ones
  2. The de-Filipinization (脱フィリピン化)
With the establishment of free trade between America and the Philippines, it enabled both to export and import their own goods.

However, Philippine exports are limited: hemp, sugar, and tobacco only were allowed to entry American markets. While America exports were unlimited. Thus, eventually American goods shifted "luxuries" to "necessities", which led to the loss of Philippine delicacies .

Most Filipinos probably think that something from America is always good without any logical evaluations, which has sunk into the subconscious of them.

That kind of mindset inevitably makes the Filipinos think that "something from our country is inferior" without any logical evaluations.

The Filipinos have been in confusion as ever and suffering from the side effect of the American occupation.

METRO MANILA (independent film)

I have watched an interesting film so I am going to share my review of it with you here.

A family from the province of Banaue, which is widely known for the Rice Terraces and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site, came to down to Metro Manila to make a living.

Oscar, the father of the family as well as a farmer who used to serve as a solider for four years, was hired by an Armed Truck Company after his struggling in Metro Manila.

He never knew that he would be exposed to the dangers of his job, and the equivalent of his life is just 500 pesos a day.

His wife, Mai, also grabbed the opportunity to work as a dancer in a bar, which was an undesirable job for her. However, since the family cannot survive with only her husband's income, she decided to work at the bar.

Sean Ellis, the British director of this film, is also a photographer, which explains the artistic aspects of the film. The landscape of the Rice Terraces shown at the very first scene of the film was a breathtaking art itself.

But, the film was more focused on the dark side of Metro Manila; money, greed, the sex industry, betrayal, and murder.

Oscar was portrayed as an innocent and loyal man, and at the same time, as a naive man, a personality that caused him trouble most of the time.

Sometimes poverty deprives people of reason, which might induce desperate actions that would end up to committing a crime.

How can we judge those people who committed a crime to escape from poverty? How should we judge people who became prostitutes for a living. Do you see these things as vice or virtue?

This film makes me think and poses a lot of questions at me.

The best movie among the recent ones that I have watched so far.

Is It All Their Faults?

To a lot of Japanese companies, the Philippines is one of the biggest potential countries following Indonesia.

UNIQLO, the biggest clothing company in Japan, for example. has branches expanding rapidly, especially around Metro Manila.

FamilyMart, too, teamed up with Ayala, the biggest and the most prestigious real estate company in the Philippines, already has started launching and expanding its branches nationwide.

Japanese people who are aware of this growing economy in the country want to make it big in starting up their businesses by jumping into the bandwagon.

Starting business here is not that costly unless they are choosy about locations. The electric bill is still expensive; the labor is much cheaper though.

Those business-starting conditions are not bad; however, many Japanese are struggling with getting their businesses on the right track.

I think, that is because the Philippines is considered a country where businessmen have a hard time keeping them afloat.

Some Japanese claimed that they were fooled by their Filipino business partners, which seems either pathetic or foolish but the proportion of the incident happening is sort of high.

In my opinion, people who are fooled also have some faults to some degree; they might not have had business sense from the start, have lacked English skills and understanding of a different culture, or might not have been able to gain credibility.

You cannot determine that only one factor triggers failures when you failed on something.

My point is that it is not a good thing to blame everything that led you to failures on your Filipino business partners and broadcast it, making it exaggerated.

Selfie - Modern disease?

Makati City, known for a business district and the busiest city in the Philippines, is now the capital of selfie of the world, according to TIME, the American weekly news magazine, dated March 10, 2014.

Since I myself live in Makati, I often see a lot of Filipinos taking selfies saying, "picture, picture tayo!", though some of them sometimes get in the way when I am walking.

The Filipinos seem to cherish every single moment. That is why they want to keep it as a memory by taking a picture.

In my opinion, it is fine to take a picture when people have a special occasion, but I don't see the point of taking pictures of daily life.

The reason why I think like that is because, probably, I am not that type of person who wants to expose my own pictures to any social sites.

Some studies have already revealed the psyche of people who are addicted to taking pictures of themselves.

Basically, they post their own pictures because they are confident about their looks. However, on the flip side, they have intense desire that they want to be acknowledged by other people, which indicates low-esteem and lack of confidence.

The act of taking a lot of selfies sometimes triggers Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD), which is a disorder that a person spends a lot of time worrying about his appearance.

The phenomenon of selfie-taking has been happening not only in the Philippines, but also around the world. If someone already suffers from this modern disease, it can be referred to as the compensation of developed technology.

A Risk of Generalizing

A lot of people ten to generalize; Japanese are hardworking and Americans are crazy about fast food.

Generalizing gives us brief images of something unknown, but at the same time, it gives us biases and prejudices.

Some Japanese have a bias toward the Filipinos, for example, they still tend to associate Filipino women in Japan with hostesses. Furthermore, Filipino men are lazy to work, like couch potatoes.

Those kinds of Japanese probably don't know that Filipinos, especially the ones working abroad, are well-acknowledged as hardworking people all over the world, which is actually something that cannot be compared with us Japanese. Some Filipinos are already in a high position in a company, having a lot of subordinates.

I cannot generalize the Filipinos because the Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than  7,000 islands, which means that there different kinds of people, customs, and food in each one of its regions. It is also the same thing as Japan.

It is not that all information that you can get from the Internet is true. If you visit a country that you have been interested in, sometimes you would be puzzled by the gap of the image that you had before going and what you can see with your own eyes.

We also need to be reminded that generalizing makes people ignorant sometimes.

Have I been Filipinized?

I didn't realize how my surroundings affected my personality and attitude, while living on the Philippines. But, it became obvious when I went back to my country. Sometimes, I find it funny if I follow the Filipino customs in Japan.

例えば
For example:

  2. Neither put a tray away not throw trash away in a bin at a fast-food restaurant. If the tray disturbs my space, place it on the next table.
  3. If something undesirable happens, tend to say "Ay naku!".
  4. When greeting someone, lift the eyebrows.

On the other hand, because if I get to used to the Philippine environments, sometimes I find it strange if something that would be supposed to happen to me in the Philippines doesn't happen to me in Japan, one example is that men offer seat to women in the train.

One time, I was standing holding onto a strap in a train. A lady sitting right in front of me stood up and  got down shortly after the train stopped at a station. I was thinking whether I should sit or not for a while, looking at the vacant seat.

However, all of a sudden, a man wearing corporate attire sat down there without any hesitation! Ay naku, talaga naman!!

In the Philippines, men are, most of the time, the ones who give up on their seat for women in the train. That is why I was a little bit upset at the man but I had to cool down and try to think like, "That is not an usual thing in Japan".

I came to the point that the reason why Filipino women can work is the understanding and support from Filipino husbands.

Behave yourself, please

A couple of days ago, I was having coffee in the middle of the night at MacDonald's. Meanwhile, I saw two men enter, talking loudly.

At first, I thought they were Chinese but the language that they were using was actually Japanese. The two men wearing casual clothes, one aged 30 plus and the other one aged 20 plus, didn't look like expats.

For me, Japanese expats here look decent even if they wear casual clothes.

A few minutes later, when I took a glance at them they were still in the middle of ordering. I was wondering what took them so long?

The older one already left the counter and sat down, but the younger one was still at the counter and talking to staff, to my surprise, in Japanese.

The staff were trying to explain about an additional charge to him in English, but his responses were all in Japanese.

He seemed upset. Was that because the staff weren't able to understand his Japanese or he was just upset with himself because of his low English level?

I felt like he was about to rant.

Anyway, I found him crazy and felt embarrassed as fellow a countryman. I could tell that he is not well-mannered here or even in Japan.

That kind of person just comes to the Philippines and ends up leaving a bad impression on Filipinos. That's what I hate the most.

What can we learn from the Filipinos?

Yesterday, I had to go to the immigration inside of the City Hall in Quezon City to get my renewed ACR I-card. Actually, it was my first time going there so I asked one of my school staff how to get there.

I took MRT, and got off at GMA station. So far so good, but my biggest challenge was to get on a jeep going to the City Hall. I had to take a careful look at the destinations written on the side of a jeep. To double-check, I also asked the jeep driver whether this jeep went to the City Hall.

After paying the jeep fare P 8, I was thinking when I should say "pala" to the jeep driver because I had no ides of what the City Hall looked like.

Basically, there are no jeep stops. That's why I asked a Filipino passenger who was sitting facing me where I should get off. He  said in Taglish, "sige, but I have to get off in a while, so I will ask another passenger to let you know".

When the jeep was almost near the City Hall, some passengers who were not even asked by the guy earlier to let me know kindly told me, "dito, dito!". That is nice of the Filipinos!

When someone is in trouble, they are willing to help him or her. Thanks to those kind passengers, I was finally able to get to the City Hall!

I don't know they noticed that I was a foreigner, but regardless of nationality Filipinos usually help people who are in trouble.

Sometimes I feel that some Japanese, especially in Tokyo, are cold. They even happen to see a person apparently doesn't know what to do, they just ignore and pass by the person.

If I encounter situations like that in Japan, I will definitely help other people just as the Filipino passengers in the jeep did for me.

If I feel good as to what other people have done for me, at least I have a kind of responsibility to spread it out by taking action.

Are You Butthurtpinoy?

Since I am on summer vacation right now, in order for me to understand the Philippines more, I watch some videos on Youtube related to the country everyday.

Of course, I take a look at comments of the videos as well so that I will know how other people think about this country.

I think that Filipinos basically like to leave a comment, and to share their thoughts. On the other hand, we Japanese are not willing to do so because of our language barrier English. Or we might not be that opinionated even on the internet.

I have recently happened to see an interesting term that indicates some Filipinos, which is called "butthurtpinoy".

According to what people say, it means defensive and vulnerable Filipinos who cannot take any criticism when it comes to their own country. And, they often use a proud-to-be-pinoy term when other Filipinos did something great that makes people worldwide acknowledge them as really talented ones.

It is natural for the Filipinos to feel good about that, but the problem with butthurtpinoys is that they feel good as if they also did something great.

Any achievements made by Filipinos should stimulate and motivate the others in such a way they would also want to achieve something in their lives.

However, butthurtpinoy don't think like that. Rather, they seem to be waiting for the next achievement that would be made by other Filipinos.

I noticed that some are already pissed off with those Pinoys.

A Comparison of Philippine Education and Japanese Education

Since I have experienced going to school in both countries (my education is still ongoing), I would like to share my thoughts about it with you.
My high school in Japan was deeply tied with the imperial family, so when there, I was studying there, I kind of felt like my school was too conservative and right-leaning in a negative way.

According to hearsay, my high school was called the "North Korea in Shibuya", which I came to know on the Internet after graduating.

I remember how rigid class was; students were just listening to the teacher there were almost no group activities.

I guess this is a very typical class in Japan.

In the Philippines, all students are required to participate in a class and they are asked to say their own opinions during class. If a student cannot answer, the teacher gives them to think or asks a different question.

While in Japan, if a student cannot answer, the teacher asks others instead. Considering the difference, Filipino teachers seem more patient than Japanese ones.

To make things worse, in Japan, the teacher doesn't even ask why a student answered the way they did.

The practice prevents Japanese students from developing a logical thinking process.

In my opinion, a class should be where students can shine and share their thoughts and opinions with one another, which sets them apart.

However, sadly enough, in Japanese society, people who are opinionated or try to leave a mark tend to be ostracized most of the time.

It can be described with the English proverb, "the nail that sticks out will be pounded down".

There is a similar Filipino saying called "crab mentality", a way of thinking where a person constantly tries to pull others down.

For example, supposed I am the only one who did a required assignment. And my classmates tell me that, "don't tell our professor about the assignment". It actually happened to me.

I guess this is a common trait of among islanders.

A Former School Principal arrested in Suspected Prostitution

Takashima, 64, was arrested for suspected child pornography.

First of all, I was really shocked about the abnormal number of women he have had sex in 25 years, which is roughly 12,000. Secondly, to my surprise, when running my eyes over the article, I encountered a very familiar place to me.

The suspect has been strongly interested in prostitution since when he was assigned to Manila Japanese school that is located in Global City.

According to the investigation, the police seized some videos that were shot his doing something obscene with girls, and more than 140,000 pictures of women from his house in Yokohama, Kanagawa.

Surprisingly, he assigned numbers to each one of the women in the pictures.

It is suspected that he brought a minor Filipino girl to a hotel in Manila, and had sex with her last January.

For most people, he is just a disgusting guy, but for women engaged in prostitution, he might have been a nice guy who paid money for them. And, we can also think like this: some of them might have been able to sustain their lives with the paid money.

However, I have to make it clear that having sex with a minor is illegal under law.

Philippine literature: Bamboo in the Wind

Bamboo in the Wind. winner of the 1990 Palanca Grand Prize for Novel, tells about the Filipinos under martial law that was declared during the Marcos era in 1972.
After having finished reading the novel, complicated feelings lifted up in my chest. At the same time, I couldn't help having an admiration toward the Filipinos back then who enthusiastically participated in demonstrations for the sake of freedom and to make a change in the nation. Martial law actually massacred a lot of people regardless of age, sex, and social status. There were some accounts from which I involuntarily turned my eyes away: that women got assaulted, men killed in brutal ways. This is one of the saddest tragedy that have occurred inside the country.

"Bamboo" represents the Filipinos themselves, and "Wind" represents political power in the novel. Even if the wind blows away, and hits bamboo with enormous power, the bent bamboo never breaks but remains quiet and strong.

I really want to encourage Japanese to read this novel, which would give them some knowledge about Philippine history. You would have a perspective that is totally different from the one prior to read this novel.
