Why Does Attack on Titan intrigue A Lot Of People? なぜ進撃の巨人は人々を魅了するのか？

日本の漫画「進撃の巨人」が世界中で旋風を巻き起こしています。その人気熱はとどまることを知らず、日本のファンは今年の8月に上映される実写版の映画に期待に胸を膨らませています。

The Japanese comic, Attack on Titan, has been creating a big sensation across the world. Its popularity knows no bounds, and the Japanese fans are now overwhelmingly excited with the live-action film that will be shown this August.

去年フィリピンで上映され、アジア映画の記録を破った実写版「るろうに剣心」は私に衝撃を与えました。期待を大いに超え、言うまでもなく２・３年でよくできた映画だったからです。

The live-action film, Rurouni Kenshin, which was shown in the Philippines and broke the records for an Asian film released in the country last year, was an eye-opener for me because it was totally beyond my expectations and, no doubt, one of the most well-made films in the past few 

years.

ついに日本の映画業界がやってみせたという感じがしました。

I felt like that the Japanese film industry finally nailed it!

私自身、進撃の巨人の漫画を読んだこともアニメを見たこともありませんでした。しかし「るろうに剣心」に続き、またアニメの実写版が公開されるということもあり、長期の夏休みを利用しYou Tubeでアニメを見始めました。

I myself had neither read the comic of Attack on Titan nor watched its cartoon but since I have heard that its live-action film is upcoming, following Rurouni Kenshin, I have started watching its cartoon on You tube, taking advantage of my long summer vacation. 

なぜそもそも進撃の巨人は人々を魅了するのでしょうか？

Why does Attack on Titan intrigue a lot of people in the first place?

これが私の考察です。
Here is my observations:

1. A fear towards something controlling humans in reality　（現実に人間を支配している何かへの恐怖）
2. Uncanny valley theory　（不気味の谷の理論）
3. Fujoshi elements　（腐女子的要素）

これらを順番に説明していきたいと思います。

I will explain these in order.

「進撃の巨人」の舞台はドイツです。それゆえ、ほとんどのキャラクターの名前はドイツ名です。それは、それぞれの名前を覚えるのに一苦労します。

The setting of Attack on Titan is in Germany. Hence, most of its characters have German names, which is sort of difficult for me to remember each of their name.

しかし、一度壁から街を見下ろす60メートル級の超巨大巨人を目にすると、名前を覚えることなどどうでもよくなってしまうのです。なぜなら、本当の醍醐味は巨人の他何でもないのですから。

But, once I see a 60-meter or so titan looking down on a town form a wall, remembering names no longer matters because the real thrill is nothing more than the titan.

「人類を脅かすものなどない」　しかし彼らは気づきました、それはそうであるべきだとただ願っていたこと、そして鳥かごの中に入れられていたことしよる支配への一種の恐怖と屈辱感。

"Nothing threatens human beings". But, they have realized that they had been just desiring it should have been, and that a sense of fear and humiliation being controlled, by keeping them in a birdcage. 

この話で一番不気味なことは、人食い巨人の遭遇など、アニメで起こるたくさんのことは私たちにとって現実味のないことです。しかしそうであっても、ある時点で私たちはアニメのキャラクターが感じている恐怖に類似した気持ちを持つかもしれない。

The eeriest thing about this story is that a lot of things happening in this cartoon is, of course, unrealistic for us, such as the encounter of man-eating creatures, but even so, at some point we might have feelings akin to the fear that the characters feel in the cartoon.

つまり、現実に私たち人類も何かに、そして誰かに支配されているのかもしれないのです。

That is, we human beings might also be controlled by something or someone in reality.

これがたくさんの人々の好奇心を刺激する一つの要因だと思います。

I think that this is one of the factors that Attack on Titan stimulates our curiosities.

「不気味の谷」というのを聞いたことがありますか？1970年代、当時の東京工業大学の制御工学の教授であった、森政弘氏によって提唱された概念であり、主にロボットや人形などの非人間的物体を言及しているものです。

Have you ever heard of the "Uncanny Valley"? The concept, which was proposed by Masahiro Mori, the Japanese professor of engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology in the 1970s, mostly refers to non-human objects, such as robots, puppets, and dolls.

森氏の理論によりますと、ある点で人間は、外見が類似しているが、本物の人間には似つかない非人間的物体に対し反応しやすくなるというものです。

According to his theory, there is a certain point where people are more likely to react to a non-human object, whose appearance resembles, but is not identical to real humans. 

さらに、人間のような動きがそれに加わると、人間のそれに対する恐怖が最大値に到達します。その良い例は映画などで見られるゾンビです。下の図をご覧下さい。

Moreover, as more human-like movements are added to it, the fear that humans feel towards it reaches the maximum point. A good example of it is zombies that can be seen in movies.　Please take a look at the graph below.

この理論を考えると、進撃の巨人も当てはまるように思えるのです。アニメでの巨人は性器を持ちません、そのため生殖機能はありません。それに加え、消化器官もありません。しかし巨人の多くの動きは、走ったり、掴んだり、そして食べたりと人間と同じです。何より、人間に恐ろしく似ています。

Considering this theory,  Attack on Titan seems similar. Titans in its cartoon don't posses genitalia, whereby their reproductive system doesn't function. In addition, they don't have a digestive track either. Yet most of their actions are similar to humans, like running, grabbing, and eating. Above all else, they are human-looking.

巨人に対する恐怖があるにもかかわらず、進撃の巨人を見るのを止められなくなったのならば、「不気味の谷」理論がその影にあるのかもしれません。

If you cannot stop watching Attack on Titan, in spite of  having fear towards the titans. the Uncanny Valley theory might be behind this. 

進撃の巨人は、少年ジャンプに次いで、二番目の発行部数を誇っている少年マガジンからです。そのような少年誌は主に男の子に読まれていたものでした。しかし電子書籍が普及するにつれ、その発行部数は年々下降気味です。

Attack on Tiran itself is from Shounen Magazine, the second publication following  Shounen Jump. Those comics had been mostly read by boys but, since e-books have become pervasive, the circulation of publication has been declining year by year.

一方で少年誌を読んだことのある女性は、少女誌があるにもかかわらず、前と比べここ10年で増えています。

On the other hand, I guess that the number of women who have read boy's comics has been increasing in the past decade compared to before, although there are still comics for girls. 

日本語の造語である腐女子はおそらく少年誌を最も支持している人たちなのではないでしょうか？日本ではボーイズラブと言われている同性愛に強い関心を示し、彼女等の想像力は計り知れません。さらに、そのような熱狂は伝染しやすいのです。

Fujoshi, or fangirls in English, which is a coined term in Japanese, might be the ones who support boy's comics the most. They have an intense curiosities about homosexuality, which is called boy's love (BL) in Japan, and their imagination has no limit. Moreover, such enthusiasm is really contagious.

ある漫画家は腐女子の存在を考慮し、あえて同性愛をほのめかすようなものを描きます。きっとそれは腐女子の想像力を最大にさせるでしょう。あえて言えば「おかず」を与える感じでしょう。(ちなみにタガログ語でおかずは「ウラン」です）

Some manga artists try to take into consideration the presence of Fujoshi, and dare to draw something that implies homosexuality, which would maximize Fujoshis' imaginations. It is like serving side dish (ulam in Tagalog) for them.

私が見る限り、進撃の巨人の作者はその一人で、ここ数年で腐女子が強力な少年誌の支持者であることをしっていると思います。

As far as I can see, I think that the manga of Attack on Titan does this, and knows that Fujoshi have become greatest supporters of boy's comics in the past few years.

言うまでもなく、進撃の巨人は腐女子を楽しませています。彼女らが少年誌のメサイヤ（救世主）になる得るのかは分かりませんが、少なくともその熱狂で少年誌を盛り上げていることに貢献しているのは事実です。

Not to mention Attack on Titan entertains Fujoshi as well. I don't know whether they can be the saviors of boy's comics but at least they are helping to promote those with their enthusiasm.
