Liberation and Decadence in Japan

Have you ever felt that a thing you thought it was usual, at some point, turns into an unusual thing to you? This kind of thing would happen especially to those who are away from their home or country.

One cold evening of last December, I was in a town somewhere in Japan. With coming Christmas at that time, the town seemed busier than usual. Since my father asked me to have dinner together after his work, I decided to kill time at a coffee shop until he leaves his office.

Having left the coffee shop, I rushed where he was waiting for me. On the way to the meeting place, three high school girls caught my attention.

They were distributing flyers, which were probably something related to sexual services, to people passing by. They might have just been disguised in high school girls. I would rather want to believe so but, in my eyes they seemed be the real ones.

One of them approached a middle-aged guy and gave one flyer to him. Grabbing it in a rude way, he walked out.

She seemed pissed off saying, "What the hell? I really feel discouraged to do this!". Her fierce voice probably reached his ears.

I am not sure that they are the ones who actually serve but, if that is the case I really feel bad for them.

How do their parents think about what they are doing? That kind of thought was ricocheting in my brain even during dinner with my father. It is because I was about to meet him after encountering the sort of shocking scene.

I think I had seen something similar to it already when I was still living in Japan and didn't think it was strange. But now I strongly feel it is.

I have just finished all Theology subjects in last semester. They taught me how to face myself including my weaknesses and strengths, and how to value myself.

Speaking of religion, some Japanese might show hatred to it. However, religion also includes "self-development" in its practice.

I am not Catholic myself despite I am studying in a Catholic school at present. Even so, I can agree with a lot of things in that religion. They also taught me the importance of having a faith which never shakes.

I still remember when I interviewed a nun, which was a part of requirement in the finals, She said she is happy despite she is living in a restricted life. The interview with the sister made me rethink what freedom is.

I think that Japan is one of the most liberated countries, which factor at least resulted in prosperity in the country.

However, sometimes I want to question, "Is liberation really good for people all the time?".

If you go to a convenience store in Japan you will see obscene magazines and comics being sold there, which are by the way more provocative than FHM Philippines.

They don't take into consideration like, "what if children see those stuff?"

We have a lot of serious problems such as low birth rate, aging population, and no interest in sex among the youth. I feel like that liberation of Japan has something to do with these raised problems.

Too much liberation probably leads one to decadence.

I think people who can find their value in restrictions deserve to talk about freedom.

Fool Yourself Or Accept Your Ignorance

I could not count how many times I have been frustrated with services and mass transportation in the Philippines. However, in a sense I became to appreciate to this country for making me realize how prosperous my country is, which I could not see if I don't live in a developing country.

And also, living abroad gives me different perspectives and some awareness about what is happening outside of Japan.

People are basically ignorant. I think whether we make our lives more meaningful depends on the degree in which we allow ourselves to be exposed to ignorance; an escape from our comfort zone.

As one of my favorite quotes, "Unexamined life is not worth living" said Socrates. If I had not made up my mind to study abroad, I could not have agreed with this.

I believe that skills that people have is one of the most significant element that is shaping their lives, which a lot of Japanese people probably have yet realized.

The acquisition of any skills is also the course to know who you are and where you want to go.

With the lasting recession in which the fresh graduates have a hard time to find a job, a lot of Japanese college students probably preoccupy themselves with anxiety towards a job interview that awaits them, which they could not avoid no matter what.

I dropped by a bookstore during my temporary stay in Japan. Overwhelmed because there were so many books on how to go through "Syukatsu" (The activity from applying for a job to getting a job offer) ranging from appropriate manners and responses upon a job interview to what kind of corporate attire favorable for each industry.

I know that the Japanese in general feel more secure when things are systematized and manualized but I have found this too much.

Behind this fact, I feel like I was able to foresee why those books are published. Companies might also earn money by providing some information to publishing companies, which might be about what type of applicants are likable for them. I think that, in a good sense, this is win-win relationship.

A college student who reads one of the books would try to be a favorable applicant for a company where she wants to work.

How can she make a difference? Where is her individuality?

Syukatsu, in fact, also reflects what the Japanese society looks like. Unless you get out of your comfort zone, you would never know how other people think about you and your society.

"I know myself better than any other people!". Is that really so? However, that kind of way of thinking probably makes you totally blind especially towards your weaknesses, which you don't want to be pointed out, and makes you close-minded.

After President Aquino: The Future of the Philippines

With the high rate of the economic growth, the Philippines has been progressive in the past few years.

A lot of Japanese who visited the country during 1980s, which is considered "Bubble Economy Era" in Japan, would be amazed with the number of modernized buildings and luxury condos when they visit here again.

The purpose of going to the Philippines might have been shifted from personal pleasures to the interest in the country itself.

According to BizNews Asia, issued September 14, 2015, it says that, 'the Philippines is No.1 in marine biodiversity, in seafarers and sailors, call centers, and maybe musicians.

We are No.2 in business processing outsourcing. We have the third largest coastline.

We are fourth in the world in gold and shipbuilding, and fifth in all other mineral resources.

We are No.12 in human resources, and the Filipino expatriates are the preferred employees elsewhere in the world.

However, the Philippines is prone to be acknowledged as one of the most corrupted countries in spite of those blessings of nature and honors.

President Aquino has manifested anti corruption but, as the Filipinos know, it really dies hard.

In my opinion, the Philippines should focus more on what they have to improve after President Aquino's term, which is 2016.

Felino Palafox Jr. in the said magazine proposes that, in order for the Philippines to take a leap, five factors could be attributed to its further transformation:

  • Visionary leadership (目に見えるリーダシップ)
  • Political ills
  • Good planning (計画的)
  • Good design (しっかりとした骨組み)
  • Good governance (良い政治)
The dispute with China has been a big concern in the Philippines. Based on the article "View of Territorial Disputes with China" from The Economist, issued September 18, 2015, about 95% of the Filipinos, which is ranked 1st in the countries in Asian-Pasific region are concerned about the Territorial Issue. (the source: http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2015/09/daily-chart-14?fsrc=circ%7Ccnt%7Cfbasiasf)

On the other hand, Japan is ranked 2nd, which explains that Japan and the Philippines are now in the same boat.

Considering the approval of the security bill, Japan has made a good move to prepare itself to fight against China.

However, this should not be offensive fight but defensive fight.

I think the Philippines could strengthen its tie with Japan even more than before as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has committed to make a change for our friendly nations and, of course for our nation.

I don't know exactly what will happen to the Philippines in the future, but I believe that this nation could get back the glory when the country was once leading ahead in Asia from 1900s to 1970s.

And, no one can call them "Sick man of Asia" anymore.

Why Does Attack on Titan intrigue A Lot Of People?

The Japanese comic, Attack on Titan, has been creating a big sensation across the world. Its popularity knows no bounds, and the Japanese fans are now overwhelmingly excited with the live-action film that will be shown this August.

The live-action film, Rurouni Kenshin, which was shown in the Philippines and broke the records for an Asian film released in the country last year, was an eye-opener for me because it was totally beyond my expectations and, no doubt, one of the most well-made films in the past few
years.

I felt like that the Japanese film industry finally nailed it!

I myself had neither read the comic of Attack on Titan nor watched its cartoon but since I have heard that its live-action film is upcoming, following Rurouni Kenshin, I have started watching its cartoon on You tube, taking advantage of my long summer vacation.

Why does Attack on Titan intrigue a lot of people in the first place?

Here is my observations:

  1. A fear towards something controlling humans in reality
  2. Uncanny valley theory (不気味の谷の理論)
  3. Fujoshi elements (腐女子的要素)

I will explain these in order.

The setting of Attack on Titan is in Germany. Hence, most of its characters have German names, which is sort of difficult for me to remember each of their name.

But, once I see a 60-meter or so titan looking down on a town form a wall, remembering names no longer matters because the real thrill is nothing more than the titan.

"Nothing threatens human beings". But, they have realized that they had been just desiring it should have been, and that a sense of fear and humiliation being controlled, by keeping them in a birdcage.

The eeriest thing about this story is that a lot of things happening in this cartoon is, of course, unrealistic for us, such as the encounter of man-eating creatures, but even so, at some point we might have feelings akin to the fear that the characters feel in the cartoon.

That is, we human beings might also be controlled by something or someone in reality.

I think that this is one of the factors that Attack on Titan stimulates our curiosities.

Have you ever heard of the "Uncanny Valley"? The concept, which was proposed by Masahiro Mori, the Japanese professor of engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology in the 1970s, mostly refers to non-human objects, such as robots, puppets, and dolls.

According to his theory, there is a certain point where people are more likely to react to a non-human object, whose appearance resembles, but is not identical to real humans.

Moreover, as more human-like movements are added to it, the fear that humans feel towards it reaches the maximum point. A good example of it is zombies that can be seen in movies. Please take a look at the graph below.

Considering this theory,  Attack on Titan seems similar. Titans in its cartoon don't posses genitalia, whereby their reproductive system doesn't function. In addition, they don't have a digestive track either. Yet most of their actions are similar to humans, like running, grabbing, and eating. Above all else, they are human-looking.

If you cannot stop watching Attack on Titan, in spite of  having fear towards the titans. the Uncanny Valley theory might be behind this.

Attack on Tiran itself is from Shounen Magazine, the second publication following  Shounen Jump. Those comics had been mostly read by boys but, since e-books have become pervasive, the circulation of publication has been declining year by year.

On the other hand, I guess that the number of women who have read boy's comics has been increasing in the past decade compared to before, although there are still comics for girls.

Fujoshi, or fangirls in English, which is a coined term in Japanese, might be the ones who support boy's comics the most. They have an intense curiosities about homosexuality, which is called boy's love (BL) in Japan, and their imagination has no limit. Moreover, such enthusiasm is really contagious.

Some manga artists try to take into consideration the presence of Fujoshi, and dare to draw something that implies homosexuality, which would maximize Fujoshis' imaginations. It is like serving side dish (ulam in Tagalog) for them.

As far as I can see, I think that the manga of Attack on Titan does this, and knows that Fujoshi have become greatest supporters of boy's comics in the past few years.

Not to mention Attack on Titan entertains Fujoshi as well. I don't know whether they can be the saviors of boy's comics but at least they are helping to promote those with their enthusiasm.

I hope this entry will stimulate readers' curiosities too.

Break traditional and molding systems in Japan

According to the article of Japan Times issued 9 July, 2015, UNIQLO, the biggest Japanese clothing company faces a big challenge along with its oversea expansions.

With the rapid expansions abroad, the number of the oversea branches, 818, is expected to reach that of the domestic branches, 844, within this year. As a result, UNIQLO anticipates that the total of its all branches including the other stores, such as G.U and Theory under the umbrella of UNIQLO, reaches 3,000.

The profits from oversea branches bolster UNIQLO, due to the decline in population in Japan. They are offering durable and simple designed clothes at reasonable prices for their customers. Those high quality clothes either keep customers coming back or leading them to brand switching.

The information on UNIQLO aside, the problem that they are facing, which I mentioned above, is their systematic manuals.

In the branch of Australia, its customers are welcomed with the greetings, "welcome to UNIQLO", which is a manual applied for all branches. UNIQLO staff don't try to approach to customers unless customers ask them for something because approaching to customers is considered "disturbing them".

However, Australian customers usually have a short and casual conversation with staff at a store, like "how are you?", "I am good, thank you". They feel more comfortable and welcomed with such a frank greeting.

Because of this cultural difference, Australian customers feel awkward with the Japanese robotic greetings.

We Japanese are proud of our services acknowledged around the world. However, many Japanese companies still believe that their services, or customers-are-God services, are accepted by people worldwide but it is not necessarily.

Japanese in general, most of the time, are not good at assimilating different culture. As a result, they have no alternatives to push their Japanese value to foreigners saying "Oh, in Japan, blah blah blah...". I am afraid to say that those Japanese don't deserve to live in another country.

Does English, which has become an official language in UNIQLO since 2012, help them get involved in Globalization? Probably it does on the surface but the nature of Globalization is united, assimilation, and diversity through understanding cultural backgrounds of other countries.

Sadly enough, it seems to take a lot of time to break the traditional and molding systems in Japan. But, we have to realize that those kinds of systems actually jeopardize Japan itself.

Love or Money

According to a survey conducted last February, which asked the Filipinos nationwide which person was more attractive; one who is good-looking but has no sense of humor, or one who is ugly but has a sense of humor, it shows that about 90% of the Filipinos prefer the latter.

Filipinos in general like to say jokes, which even may sound corny, saying "joke lang!". On another point, some might do so to shake off their shyness.

I think that the people here, basically, are optimistic, they are able to turn even gloomy situations into cheerful ones. I think that is what the Japanese lack in and what we have to learn from the Filipinos most.

Of course, we have similar surveys on romantic interests in Japan. And the one I often see is like this; a person who is ugly but has much money or one who is handsome but has no money. I feel like that this survey is more likely to reveal which one is better, not which one is more attractive.

However, it gives us some idea about what the Japanese weigh on in choosing partners.

This kind of survey tells us something about the cultural background and the current situations of each country.

The rapid economic growth in the Philippines has been raising the number of middle-class families but even so, in reality, a lot of Filipinos are still suffering from continuing poverty. A fact that Filipinos living the above average life are also very aware of it.

Because of this factor, the Filipinos don't try to think that love can be measured with money alone, whereas the Japanese tend to think of love in more materialistic ways.

Sometimes, such a thinking makes it difficult for the Japanese, especially men, to put all of their hearts into romantic relationships.

For instance concern like,  "what if I can't buy things my girlfriend wants? "It's not worth using money for my girlfriend", all of which keeps them from dating with someone else.

I think that that is the difference between a developing country and developed one.

"Love or Money", these are always brought up for discussion and have never been solved. If we say love is more important than money, it sounds like we are hypocrites.

And if we say money is more important than love , it sounds like we are gold diggers.
Consequently, maybe both are important for us.

A Vanishing of Patriotism and an Emergence of Extremism

With the implementation of the law regarding the national flag and anthem in 1999, Hakubun Shimomura, the current cabinet of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Culture required all government run universities nationwide to sing the national anthem on all special occasions, such as entrance and graduation ceremonies.

Yet of 86 national universities, according to the survey of Asahi Shinbun, one of the leading newspapers in Japan, only 11 conducted the anthem in the entrance ceremonies this year.

Some professors explained that they had to consider the international students who were not familiar with the anthem. This explanation, which is like a mere excuse, is not conceivable enough for me because Japan in general doesn't take into consideration minority people.

Left-Wing groups fiercely opposed that the requirement of singing the anthem was utterly against freedom of expression, moreover, its lyrics implies nothing more than Militarism coupled with Fascism; "Kimi", the very first word of the anthem, as one of the assumptions says, implies "sovereign", which is the Japanese emperor, who was considered the very figure who induced the Japanese to get into war.

Many, if not most, Japanese people have a misconception about "Patriotism", which has been vanishing since the loss of World War II.

The said Left-Wing people don't seem to have identity as Japanese. Rather, thier feelings have been stirred with fierce anger towards the Japanese imperialism back then, which have been holding them back for a long time.

Shifting Collectivism to Individualism after the war might have changed our attitude towards the nation. Some liberated Japanese insist that whether or nor they stand up and sing the anthem should be entrusted in their will, which brings up other cases and comparisons on how other countries handle this issue.

Those people don't have a sense of Patriotism either, but are full of selfishness, and ironically speaking, they are just swamped with "False Individualism".

I want to raise my voice that the national flag and anthem are symbols of our nation. How do you identify and differ yourself form other people without any symbolic things? Individualism no longer exists at that point.

Incidentally, some lyrics of the national anthem can be found in Kokin-waka shu, the old Japanese poetry composed over 1,000 years ago.

To the point that the poem was read for the noble people at that time, the lyrics contains respectable meanings; a time when a man and a woman respect and love each other that lasts forever, strengthening the bond and trust, which would be connected to the next generation.

The national anthem is neither about Militarism nor the emperor worship, but sung about the spirit of the religion, "Shinto".

Patriotism should not be treated lightly because it also tells us how to love ourselves and people around us.

The most terrifying thing is Extremism, like the Left-Wing people that I mentioned.

My Journey to English Mastery

The 2020 Olympics that will be held in Tokyo seems to spur the Japanese to English proficiency.

From language schools and online schools to various English textbooks at bookstores, we Japanese have a lot of English-learning materials and plenty of opportunity.

The number of English learners in Japan, in the past few years, has been drastically increasing in response to the sensation, but of those people, how many are actually adept in the language, ranging from conversational skill to formal speaking skill. I think it is very few.

In my case, I have been eager to keep studying English since I made up my mind to enroll at a university in the Philippines.

I have tried as many English-learning methods as possible to find one that is suitable for me.

Sometimes, I desperately felt frustrated when those methods didn't work for me, and I saw so many corrections on a written exam in English, which utterly discouraged me from studying English further.

That is because, I can see myself beck then, I was craving for the instant gratification.

Until I realized that, I had been quite defensive and emotional, making excuses, which might be considered a form of defense mechanism, when someone pointed out mistakes in my English.

Some people are prone to take it personally when being severely corrected by someone.

Ashamed, I used to be one of them. However, I came to realize that I could never endure learning English in the sate of mind in which emotion overpowers reason.

Starting to blame our poor English performance on textbooks that we bought at a bookstore, we question, "Why did we want to study English in the first place?".

Language mastery seems to challenge us. Rather, learning challenges our emotional aptitude, testing our patience, delaying gratification, and self-control; it is not all about linguistic competence.

To be honest, I am not in an environment surrounded by 100 % English speakers.

That is why I am little bit envious of Japanese students who study in a native English speaking country, such as America, England, and Australia, which are the most popular destinations for English learning.

However, I still want to prove to those people that I can understand and use English, even if I study in the Philippines.

This is good motivation to propel me forward in learning English.

My story aside, motivation is also the key to English mastery.

My journey to English mastery is still ongoing.

Do Japanese companies open the door or shut the door to foreigners?

As of now, Japanese firms open the door to people from overseas for the sake of globalization "technically".

Recruiting foreigners might be a part of their strategy to show their tolerance towards accepting foreigners, which also attracts Japanese fresh graduates.

With the aging population in Japan, the decline in birth rate is one of the biggest concerns in the country, which would cause the labor scarcity in the future.

To compensate it, Japan has to take steps that revitalize its entire economy beforehand.

In fact, a lot of Japanese companies are not ready for the reception of foreigners, albeit they already have started recruiting.

What do I mean by that?

Japanese companies require applicants form overseas to possess at least Nihongo level 2 in Japanese language proficiency Test (JLPT). On top of that, they expect that those applicants already understand and use business Japanese.

Considering the number of Japanese learners who are capable of that, it seems like they already shut the door to foreign applicants who desire to work for them.

Japanese companies don't want to take a risk of hiring foreigners who cannot speak decent Japanese in every business setting because they consider that the use of unpolished Japanese would cause the loss of credibility of their clients.

Focusing too much on the Japanese skills of a foreign applicant in recruiting seems to be another story. Whether the applicant brings profit for a Japanese company really matters. For example, if the company is aiming for its expansion to an oversea country, people who can communicate and negotiate with locals there can be the key to success.

Japanese companies need to rethink the nature of inviting foreigners, and should stop treating them as second-class people.

Is It All Their Faults?

To a lot of Japanese companies, the Philippines is one of the biggest potential countries following Indonesia.

UNIQLO, the biggest clothing company in Japan, for example. has branches expanding rapidly, especially around Metro Manila.

FamilyMart, too, teamed up with Ayala, the biggest and the most prestigious real estate company in the Philippines, already has started launching and expanding its branches nationwide.

Japanese people who are aware of this growing economy in the country want to make it big in starting up their businesses by jumping into the bandwagon.

Starting business here is not that costly unless they are choosy about locations. The electric bill is still expensive; the labor is much cheaper though.

Those business-starting conditions are not bad; however, many Japanese are struggling with getting their businesses on the right track.

I think, that is because the Philippines is considered a country where businessmen have a hard time keeping them afloat.

Some Japanese claimed that they were fooled by their Filipino business partners, which seems either pathetic or foolish but the proportion of the incident happening is sort of high.

In my opinion, people who are fooled also have some faults to some degree; they might not have had business sense from the start, have lacked English skills and understanding of a different culture, or might not have been able to gain credibility.

You cannot determine that only one factor triggers failures when you failed on something.

My point is that it is not a good thing to blame everything that led you to failures on your Filipino business partners and broadcast it, making it exaggerated.

A Risk of Generalizing

A lot of people ten to generalize; Japanese are hardworking and Americans are crazy about fast food.

Generalizing gives us brief images of something unknown, but at the same time, it gives us biases and prejudices.

Some Japanese have a bias toward the Filipinos, for example, they still tend to associate Filipino women in Japan with hostesses. Furthermore, Filipino men are lazy to work, like couch potatoes.

Those kinds of Japanese probably don't know that Filipinos, especially the ones working abroad, are well-acknowledged as hardworking people all over the world, which is actually something that cannot be compared with us Japanese. Some Filipinos are already in a high position in a company, having a lot of subordinates.

I cannot generalize the Filipinos because the Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than  7,000 islands, which means that there different kinds of people, customs, and food in each one of its regions. It is also the same thing as Japan.

It is not that all information that you can get from the Internet is true. If you visit a country that you have been interested in, sometimes you would be puzzled by the gap of the image that you had before going and what you can see with your own eyes.

We also need to be reminded that generalizing makes people ignorant sometimes.

Have I been Filipinized?

I didn't realize how my surroundings affected my personality and attitude, while living on the Philippines. But, it became obvious when I went back to my country. Sometimes, I find it funny if I follow the Filipino customs in Japan.

例えば
For example:

  2. Neither put a tray away not throw trash away in a bin at a fast-food restaurant. If the tray disturbs my space, place it on the next table.
  3. If something undesirable happens, tend to say "Ay naku!".
  4. When greeting someone, lift the eyebrows.

On the other hand, because if I get to used to the Philippine environments, sometimes I find it strange if something that would be supposed to happen to me in the Philippines doesn't happen to me in Japan, one example is that men offer seat to women in the train.

One time, I was standing holding onto a strap in a train. A lady sitting right in front of me stood up and  got down shortly after the train stopped at a station. I was thinking whether I should sit or not for a while, looking at the vacant seat.

However, all of a sudden, a man wearing corporate attire sat down there without any hesitation! Ay naku, talaga naman!!

In the Philippines, men are, most of the time, the ones who give up on their seat for women in the train. That is why I was a little bit upset at the man but I had to cool down and try to think like, "That is not an usual thing in Japan".

I came to the point that the reason why Filipino women can work is the understanding and support from Filipino husbands.

Behave yourself, please

A couple of days ago, I was having coffee in the middle of the night at MacDonald's. Meanwhile, I saw two men enter, talking loudly.

At first, I thought they were Chinese but the language that they were using was actually Japanese. The two men wearing casual clothes, one aged 30 plus and the other one aged 20 plus, didn't look like expats.

For me, Japanese expats here look decent even if they wear casual clothes.

A few minutes later, when I took a glance at them they were still in the middle of ordering. I was wondering what took them so long?

The older one already left the counter and sat down, but the younger one was still at the counter and talking to staff, to my surprise, in Japanese.

The staff were trying to explain about an additional charge to him in English, but his responses were all in Japanese.

He seemed upset. Was that because the staff weren't able to understand his Japanese or he was just upset with himself because of his low English level?

I felt like he was about to rant.

Anyway, I found him crazy and felt embarrassed as fellow a countryman. I could tell that he is not well-mannered here or even in Japan.

That kind of person just comes to the Philippines and ends up leaving a bad impression on Filipinos. That's what I hate the most.

What can we learn from the Filipinos?

Yesterday, I had to go to the immigration inside of the City Hall in Quezon City to get my renewed ACR I-card. Actually, it was my first time going there so I asked one of my school staff how to get there.

I took MRT, and got off at GMA station. So far so good, but my biggest challenge was to get on a jeep going to the City Hall. I had to take a careful look at the destinations written on the side of a jeep. To double-check, I also asked the jeep driver whether this jeep went to the City Hall.

After paying the jeep fare P 8, I was thinking when I should say "pala" to the jeep driver because I had no ides of what the City Hall looked like.

Basically, there are no jeep stops. That's why I asked a Filipino passenger who was sitting facing me where I should get off. He  said in Taglish, "sige, but I have to get off in a while, so I will ask another passenger to let you know".

When the jeep was almost near the City Hall, some passengers who were not even asked by the guy earlier to let me know kindly told me, "dito, dito!". That is nice of the Filipinos!

When someone is in trouble, they are willing to help him or her. Thanks to those kind passengers, I was finally able to get to the City Hall!

I don't know they noticed that I was a foreigner, but regardless of nationality Filipinos usually help people who are in trouble.

Sometimes I feel that some Japanese, especially in Tokyo, are cold. They even happen to see a person apparently doesn't know what to do, they just ignore and pass by the person.

If I encounter situations like that in Japan, I will definitely help other people just as the Filipino passengers in the jeep did for me.

If I feel good as to what other people have done for me, at least I have a kind of responsibility to spread it out by taking action.

Sneaky, Atrocious, and Complicated Crimes in Japan

A couple of months ago, a 13-year-old boy was killed by his friends aged 18 in Kawasaki, Kanagawa. After being stabbed several times, his body was abandoned at a riverside area.

Since a minor who committed crime is protected by the Juvenile Law, the criminals will never be sentenced to death, even would never spend the rest of their lives behind bars, regardless of the degree of the crime.

According to the police investigation, the criminals tied up the boy's hands with a rope and stabbed him around the neck, mimicking ISIS members who murdered two Japanese journalists this year.

I think there are too many people who have died for nonsense reasons in Japan.

The incident in Akihabara 7 years ago, which was called the "Akihabara massacre", still burns into my brain.

Having run over 5 people by truck, a jobless man randomly stabbed 12 people. The motive of his crime was that he was stressed out. To let it out, he mercilessly hurt a lot of people.

The most horrible thing about random attackers is that people cannot predict or prevent their attacks.

As for the 13-year-old boy that I mentioned, people around him didn't recognize that he had been actually bullied.

The crime that happen in Japan seem complicated, sneaky, and atrocious.

I have never heard of news that a Filipino killed others t random so far. I think there are, most of the time, clear reason why Filipino criminals end up committing crime. The crimes in the country seem simple, compared to the ones in Japan.

Most Japanese say to foreigners, "you should come to Japan, our country is safe!".
Is that so? I will never say such a thing to foreigners.

A Comparison of Philippine Education and Japanese Education

Since I have experienced going to school in both countries (my education is still ongoing), I would like to share my thoughts about it with you.
My high school in Japan was deeply tied with the imperial family, so when there, I was studying there, I kind of felt like my school was too conservative and right-leaning in a negative way.

According to hearsay, my high school was called the "North Korea in Shibuya", which I came to know on the Internet after graduating.

I remember how rigid class was; students were just listening to the teacher there were almost no group activities.

I guess this is a very typical class in Japan.

In the Philippines, all students are required to participate in a class and they are asked to say their own opinions during class. If a student cannot answer, the teacher gives them to think or asks a different question.

While in Japan, if a student cannot answer, the teacher asks others instead. Considering the difference, Filipino teachers seem more patient than Japanese ones.

To make things worse, in Japan, the teacher doesn't even ask why a student answered the way they did.

The practice prevents Japanese students from developing a logical thinking process.

In my opinion, a class should be where students can shine and share their thoughts and opinions with one another, which sets them apart.

However, sadly enough, in Japanese society, people who are opinionated or try to leave a mark tend to be ostracized most of the time.

It can be described with the English proverb, "the nail that sticks out will be pounded down".

There is a similar Filipino saying called "crab mentality", a way of thinking where a person constantly tries to pull others down.

For example, supposed I am the only one who did a required assignment. And my classmates tell me that, "don't tell our professor about the assignment". It actually happened to me.

I guess this is a common trait of among islanders.

A Former School Principal arrested in Suspected Prostitution

Takashima, 64, was arrested for suspected child pornography.

First of all, I was really shocked about the abnormal number of women he have had sex in 25 years, which is roughly 12,000. Secondly, to my surprise, when running my eyes over the article, I encountered a very familiar place to me.

The suspect has been strongly interested in prostitution since when he was assigned to Manila Japanese school that is located in Global City.

According to the investigation, the police seized some videos that were shot his doing something obscene with girls, and more than 140,000 pictures of women from his house in Yokohama, Kanagawa.

Surprisingly, he assigned numbers to each one of the women in the pictures.

It is suspected that he brought a minor Filipino girl to a hotel in Manila, and had sex with her last January.

For most people, he is just a disgusting guy, but for women engaged in prostitution, he might have been a nice guy who paid money for them. And, we can also think like this: some of them might have been able to sustain their lives with the paid money.

However, I have to make it clear that having sex with a minor is illegal under law.

Is overtime still a Japanese virtue?

April is a new month in Japan. During that month, those who just graduated from college or the university starts working for the company who gave them a job offer.

The longer you work for a company, the more salary raises you can get regardless of skills. This has been the fundamental system for most Japanese companies for a long time, the disadvantage of which is that people who started working way ahead, the so-called baby boomers aged forty to fifty, inevitably remain and occupy roles and positions. This is the very factor that forms a rigid vertical society

According a 2014 research by the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, 31% of the employed fresh graduates leave the company within 3 years. The rate seems to have been increasing every year. The main reason is that they were not satisfied with the working conditions such as overtime.

Because the Japanese working harder and longer during the "Golden Age" (1955-1972), the country was able to become one of the most developed countries. Hence, overtime has been regarded as a kind of Japanese virtue. This is because, until now it is believed that overtime is a criteria for how much contributions you made for a company. And, the people who went through that era try to push the young ones to work at the same rate as before. It convinces me somehow why young Japanese people end up leaving within three years.

"I already went through that suffering, so now I pass the torch to you, young men!"

Overtime is no longer a virtue, and so we have to consider it as a non-productive period in this age.

Having felt suffocated in such society, lately young people tend to work abroad, searching for a workplace where they don't feel as much stress as they did in Japan. I see many of them trying to start a new life here in the Philippines.

Probably in the near future, there would be no more young Japanese people in Japan, along with the decrease in the population.

Japanese and Propaganda

According to the study of a ranking of the world's safest city, of 50 cities in the world, Tokyo was named for safest city.

英語ではpeople living in a fool's paradiseです。
Thus, sometimes we are called "Heiwa-boke", which can be translated "people living in a fool's paradise" in English.

In my opinion, there seems to be another reason why we are called like that.

I slightly realized that Japanese newspapers, most of the time, focus too much on news happening within Japan. Even if they pick up big news from foreign press, the chance for the front page is quite slim.

Sometimes, there is a foreign news, which might affect our entire county, should be streamed by the Japanese media. Even so, they still try to prioritize news in Japan.

With easy access to the internet, ordinary individuals can check for foreign news everyday. However, when pursuing truths behind it, perhaps called "conspiracy", you will find out most resources available on the internet are written in English.

That is why English is very significant. Not only do we get a high-paying job, but also we can understand such truths.

Some Japanese people believe that Japan is one of the world-centered countries, so they don't have to learn any other language. Those kinds of people are the "Heiwa-boke".

Incidentally, when foreign press broadcasts Japanese news, to my surprise, they are more accurate than Japanese press when it comes to the negative sides.

It is rather apparent that they don't want us to be in a panic or feel insecure, however, their intention is actually to have us interpret by their own measure or bias.

This is no longer caring but propaganda.

We have to have awareness of the danger .

The Japanese people who are easily brainwashed by propaganda can also be called "Heiwa-boke".

What is the meaning of Suki of Suki-yaki

Suki-yaki, the Japanese national food, is probably known to the world because of the song, "SUKIYAKI", sung by Kyu Sakamoto, who was one of the most famous national Japanese singers.

You have to prepare a pot where beef and vegetables are placed. Beef should be sauteed in the pot before poring Suki-yaki sauce which is made up of soy sauce, sake, and sugar.

"Yaki" means "saute" or "Grill", therefore, the word makes sense for this food.

But, what about "Suki"?

"Suki" actually derives from the name of a farming tool.

Japanese originally didn't have a custom to eat beef, above all, eating it had been strictly prohabited in the early Edo era.

However, even so, farmers at that time ate grilled beef hiding with a spade, Suki in Japanese.

That's why our national food is caled "Suki-yaki"!

According to further research of the beef-eating custom in Japan, Eta (えた) and Hinin (非人), who were the lowest class people during Edo era, were already eating beef.

The reason is because they handled dead animals. That was their job back then.

In accordance with Westernization, Japanese have assimilated to the new customs and culture since Japan opened itself to foreigners, Eating beef is also was one of them.
