For The Sake Of Good Governance

The economic growth in the Philippines now slows down in spite of the highest rate remarked in 2013. On of the factors lowering the entire economy that can be considered, according to BizNews Asia issued on September 21, is agriculture.

The Philippines is supposed to be the land of abundant of rice but, to the point that the government has decided to import rice, the lasting El Nino phenomenon is a bane of the entire country.

The economy in Vietnam is also on the rise following the Philippines. In short, Vietnam is becoming more competitive more than ever before, which explains that the country might take over the position where the Philippines is ranked 5th in terms of the least competitive among the five major ASEAN countries.

In order for the Philippines not to let it happen and propel for its further prosperity, the nation needs to pull up its current economic growth at least up to 6.0 % next year.

Therefore, the 2016 election is really critical, which decides the next head of the nation.

The popularity of President Aquino still remains high. Hence, the Filipinos want a successor of Aquino who never causes any scandals unlike Joseph Estrada and Macapagal Arroyo.

However, there are still a lot of problems that could not be sorted out during his term, which, the Filipinos believe, could be done by the next president.

With the presidential system, each one of the Filipinos has a big responsibility to select the future president, which also determine their own future. Their voting decisions could take over fruit borne by Aquino or could destroy it easily.

For the coming election which decides the fate of the Philippines, the Filipinos have to remember four most important elements for good governance.

That is 4C (source: BizNews Asia)

  • Competitiveness (競争)
  • Corruption (汚職)
  • Competence (能力)
  • Climate issue (気候問題)
I will try to contemplate these four elements raising the current problems which should be sorted out as quickly as possible.

According to BizNews Asia issued on October 18, the Philippines has yet wiped out its disgraced reputations:

  • Worst mass transit in the world (世界で最低の交通機関)
  • Worst traffic in the world (世界で最低の渋滞)
  • Worst airport in the world (世界で最低の空港)
As you know, infrastructure in the country is explicitly pretty poor, which sets itself apart from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, in terms of global competitiveness.

Political dynasty, which has been deeply rooted in the Philippines, is always brought up in discussions.

Political families still dominate the entire political arena despite the prohibition of political dynasty as stated in Article II Section 26.

Considering the fact, I cannot help thinking that that matter is at least related to corruption in the country.

In the eyes of a foreigner, President Aquino doesn't seem to put a lot of efforts to reduce the corruption. Is that because he is also from a political family?

English competency in the Philippines can never be beaten by any other ASEAN countries. hence, the operation of businesses here must be easier and more comfortable for foreign businessmen.

However, in reality so many red tapes hinder them from doing business.

One of the examples is, in reference to an article of the Philippines Star issued on October 19, that the Philippines has most tedious tax payment.

It takes 193 hours for a businessman to pay 36 kinds of fees and taxes per year!

The Philippines is ranked 127th among 189 countries, which is surprisingly lower than Iran and Iraq.

For your reference, Thailand is ranked 62th, and Malaysia is ranked 32th (source: PwC).

This issue tells you, that in order to utilize the competency which the Filipinos possess, a suitable environment that maximizes it is rather essential.

The Philippines is no.5 most affected by disasters in the world. To minimize the damages, as I stated already, infrastructure is critical.

In fact, a lot of things can be done beforehand but "Bahala na" mentality, which is a Filipino expression that kind of means "Come what may", is also one of the factors hindering the country from contemplating any consequences.

Lastly, I don't think having high expectations for the government and the next president is a wise idea. The Philippines is a democratic country, meaning, the people are the ones who shape a country

The problems that I raised here might be solved with the improvement of attitude of each one of the Filipinos.

Why does corruption happen? Why is infrastructure in the Philippines delayed?

The answer is very simple.

I hope the next election will be milestone for the Filipinos, including politicians, to contemplate what has to be changed.

After President Aquino: The Future of the Philippines

With the high rate of the economic growth, the Philippines has been progressive in the past few years.

A lot of Japanese who visited the country during 1980s, which is considered "Bubble Economy Era" in Japan, would be amazed with the number of modernized buildings and luxury condos when they visit here again.

The purpose of going to the Philippines might have been shifted from personal pleasures to the interest in the country itself.

According to BizNews Asia, issued September 14, 2015, it says that, 'the Philippines is No.1 in marine biodiversity, in seafarers and sailors, call centers, and maybe musicians.

We are No.2 in business processing outsourcing. We have the third largest coastline.

We are fourth in the world in gold and shipbuilding, and fifth in all other mineral resources.

We are No.12 in human resources, and the Filipino expatriates are the preferred employees elsewhere in the world.

However, the Philippines is prone to be acknowledged as one of the most corrupted countries in spite of those blessings of nature and honors.

President Aquino has manifested anti corruption but, as the Filipinos know, it really dies hard.

In my opinion, the Philippines should focus more on what they have to improve after President Aquino's term, which is 2016.

Felino Palafox Jr. in the said magazine proposes that, in order for the Philippines to take a leap, five factors could be attributed to its further transformation:

  • Visionary leadership (目に見えるリーダシップ)
  • Political ills
  • Good planning (計画的)
  • Good design (しっかりとした骨組み)
  • Good governance (良い政治)
The dispute with China has been a big concern in the Philippines. Based on the article "View of Territorial Disputes with China" from The Economist, issued September 18, 2015, about 95% of the Filipinos, which is ranked 1st in the countries in Asian-Pasific region are concerned about the Territorial Issue. (the source: http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2015/09/daily-chart-14?fsrc=circ%7Ccnt%7Cfbasiasf)

On the other hand, Japan is ranked 2nd, which explains that Japan and the Philippines are now in the same boat.

Considering the approval of the security bill, Japan has made a good move to prepare itself to fight against China.

However, this should not be offensive fight but defensive fight.

I think the Philippines could strengthen its tie with Japan even more than before as Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has committed to make a change for our friendly nations and, of course for our nation.

I don't know exactly what will happen to the Philippines in the future, but I believe that this nation could get back the glory when the country was once leading ahead in Asia from 1900s to 1970s.

And, no one can call them "Sick man of Asia" anymore.

Why Does Attack on Titan intrigue A Lot Of People?

The Japanese comic, Attack on Titan, has been creating a big sensation across the world. Its popularity knows no bounds, and the Japanese fans are now overwhelmingly excited with the live-action film that will be shown this August.

The live-action film, Rurouni Kenshin, which was shown in the Philippines and broke the records for an Asian film released in the country last year, was an eye-opener for me because it was totally beyond my expectations and, no doubt, one of the most well-made films in the past few
years.

I felt like that the Japanese film industry finally nailed it!

I myself had neither read the comic of Attack on Titan nor watched its cartoon but since I have heard that its live-action film is upcoming, following Rurouni Kenshin, I have started watching its cartoon on You tube, taking advantage of my long summer vacation.

Why does Attack on Titan intrigue a lot of people in the first place?

Here is my observations:

  1. A fear towards something controlling humans in reality
  2. Uncanny valley theory (不気味の谷の理論)
  3. Fujoshi elements (腐女子的要素)

I will explain these in order.

The setting of Attack on Titan is in Germany. Hence, most of its characters have German names, which is sort of difficult for me to remember each of their name.

But, once I see a 60-meter or so titan looking down on a town form a wall, remembering names no longer matters because the real thrill is nothing more than the titan.

"Nothing threatens human beings". But, they have realized that they had been just desiring it should have been, and that a sense of fear and humiliation being controlled, by keeping them in a birdcage.

The eeriest thing about this story is that a lot of things happening in this cartoon is, of course, unrealistic for us, such as the encounter of man-eating creatures, but even so, at some point we might have feelings akin to the fear that the characters feel in the cartoon.

That is, we human beings might also be controlled by something or someone in reality.

I think that this is one of the factors that Attack on Titan stimulates our curiosities.

Have you ever heard of the "Uncanny Valley"? The concept, which was proposed by Masahiro Mori, the Japanese professor of engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology in the 1970s, mostly refers to non-human objects, such as robots, puppets, and dolls.

According to his theory, there is a certain point where people are more likely to react to a non-human object, whose appearance resembles, but is not identical to real humans.

Moreover, as more human-like movements are added to it, the fear that humans feel towards it reaches the maximum point. A good example of it is zombies that can be seen in movies. Please take a look at the graph below.

Considering this theory,  Attack on Titan seems similar. Titans in its cartoon don't posses genitalia, whereby their reproductive system doesn't function. In addition, they don't have a digestive track either. Yet most of their actions are similar to humans, like running, grabbing, and eating. Above all else, they are human-looking.

If you cannot stop watching Attack on Titan, in spite of  having fear towards the titans. the Uncanny Valley theory might be behind this.

Attack on Tiran itself is from Shounen Magazine, the second publication following  Shounen Jump. Those comics had been mostly read by boys but, since e-books have become pervasive, the circulation of publication has been declining year by year.

On the other hand, I guess that the number of women who have read boy's comics has been increasing in the past decade compared to before, although there are still comics for girls.

Fujoshi, or fangirls in English, which is a coined term in Japanese, might be the ones who support boy's comics the most. They have an intense curiosities about homosexuality, which is called boy's love (BL) in Japan, and their imagination has no limit. Moreover, such enthusiasm is really contagious.

Some manga artists try to take into consideration the presence of Fujoshi, and dare to draw something that implies homosexuality, which would maximize Fujoshis' imaginations. It is like serving side dish (ulam in Tagalog) for them.

As far as I can see, I think that the manga of Attack on Titan does this, and knows that Fujoshi have become greatest supporters of boy's comics in the past few years.

Not to mention Attack on Titan entertains Fujoshi as well. I don't know whether they can be the saviors of boy's comics but at least they are helping to promote those with their enthusiasm.

I hope this entry will stimulate readers' curiosities too.

Remarkable Effects of Calamansi

Calamansi, which is one of the most consumable ingredients in the Philippines, actually has more nutrients than lemon and lime that are considered rich in Vitamin C.

Aside from Vitamin C, calamansi contains more minerals than lemon; around 5 times as much as calcium, three times as much magnesium, and twice as much iron as lemon.

And, the most remarkable thing is that this ingredient has 8 times as much Vitamin C as Shi-ku-wa-sa (Ctrius depressa), which grows and is harvested in Okinawa, Japan.

How does calamansi bring health benefits for our body?

  1. Avoids body fat accumulations.
  2. Increases metabolism.
  3. Protects skin from stress and ultraviolet rays and rejuvenates skin.
  4. Adjusts cholesterol levels.
  5. Avoids catching colds.
Calamansi is inexpensive albeit its abundant nutrients. You can buy a lot at around 30 pesos. The Filipinos add some to salad, fish, chicken, pork and drinks.

Recently, I have been drinking hot calamansi water everyday. This drink is very simple! I just squeeze one or two calamansi and put the juice into a glass of hot water.

I have noticed that I have less pimples on my face than before and I feel like my skin looks shiny!

Souvenirs always draws tourists' attentions but it is also good to enjoy travelling to pay attention to local ingredients that are not available in your country.

Junk Food is basically considered unhealthy because it has high calories, saturated fat, and sodium. Eating too much will definitely affect our body, causing health problems ranging from digestive problems to life-threatening diseases.

A lot of people already know that fact but even so, when they see junk food at a store, they can't help but put some into a basket.

I am not a super-health-conscious person so I eat the local snacks ( Filipino snacks) sometimes. I have tried different types of snacks so far, most of which are really tasty and similar to Japanese snacks.

I will pick my top 5 favorite Filipino snacks and introduce them here.

1. Cracklings in Old Fashioned Salt & Vinegar

This is the one I love the most among my favorites so far. The square snack has a crunchy  texture and is flavored by vinegar. When you put one on the tongue, you can taste the strong sourness which spreads through your whole mouth. Because it has the plenty of air within, this snack may satisfy your appetite. But, I might not recommend this one for those who don't like very sour things.

2. Boy Bawang

Bawang means garlic in Tagalog. This garlicky snack is made from corn and comes in a variety of flavors, like barbecue, cheese, and even ones derived from the local dishes such as adobo and lechon chicken. The Filipinos often say that this snack is a great match for beer. You can also enjoy it as an appetizer as well.

3. Ding Dong

This snack is a mix of different kinds of nuts and rice crackers. We also have similar snacks to this in Japan. You will definitely enjoy it with beer, like Boy Bawang!

4. Cheese Ring

This Ring-shaped snack is cheesy and puffy. The taste is exactly the same as the Japanese snack, Ka-ru (カール). I like this snack very much but I don't like the package because it is printed with a creepy character.

5. Sweet Corn

This ball-shaped snack is corn-flavored and very puffy.. Sweetness is also added. You can never be tired of the light taste.

I hope you guys get some idea of the Filipino snacks I introduced.

Break traditional and molding systems in Japan

According to the article of Japan Times issued 9 July, 2015, UNIQLO, the biggest Japanese clothing company faces a big challenge along with its oversea expansions.

With the rapid expansions abroad, the number of the oversea branches, 818, is expected to reach that of the domestic branches, 844, within this year. As a result, UNIQLO anticipates that the total of its all branches including the other stores, such as G.U and Theory under the umbrella of UNIQLO, reaches 3,000.

The profits from oversea branches bolster UNIQLO, due to the decline in population in Japan. They are offering durable and simple designed clothes at reasonable prices for their customers. Those high quality clothes either keep customers coming back or leading them to brand switching.

The information on UNIQLO aside, the problem that they are facing, which I mentioned above, is their systematic manuals.

In the branch of Australia, its customers are welcomed with the greetings, "welcome to UNIQLO", which is a manual applied for all branches. UNIQLO staff don't try to approach to customers unless customers ask them for something because approaching to customers is considered "disturbing them".

However, Australian customers usually have a short and casual conversation with staff at a store, like "how are you?", "I am good, thank you". They feel more comfortable and welcomed with such a frank greeting.

Because of this cultural difference, Australian customers feel awkward with the Japanese robotic greetings.

We Japanese are proud of our services acknowledged around the world. However, many Japanese companies still believe that their services, or customers-are-God services, are accepted by people worldwide but it is not necessarily.

Japanese in general, most of the time, are not good at assimilating different culture. As a result, they have no alternatives to push their Japanese value to foreigners saying "Oh, in Japan, blah blah blah...". I am afraid to say that those Japanese don't deserve to live in another country.

Does English, which has become an official language in UNIQLO since 2012, help them get involved in Globalization? Probably it does on the surface but the nature of Globalization is united, assimilation, and diversity through understanding cultural backgrounds of other countries.

Sadly enough, it seems to take a lot of time to break the traditional and molding systems in Japan. But, we have to realize that those kinds of systems actually jeopardize Japan itself.

Love or Money

According to a survey conducted last February, which asked the Filipinos nationwide which person was more attractive; one who is good-looking but has no sense of humor, or one who is ugly but has a sense of humor, it shows that about 90% of the Filipinos prefer the latter.

Filipinos in general like to say jokes, which even may sound corny, saying "joke lang!". On another point, some might do so to shake off their shyness.

I think that the people here, basically, are optimistic, they are able to turn even gloomy situations into cheerful ones. I think that is what the Japanese lack in and what we have to learn from the Filipinos most.

Of course, we have similar surveys on romantic interests in Japan. And the one I often see is like this; a person who is ugly but has much money or one who is handsome but has no money. I feel like that this survey is more likely to reveal which one is better, not which one is more attractive.

However, it gives us some idea about what the Japanese weigh on in choosing partners.

This kind of survey tells us something about the cultural background and the current situations of each country.

The rapid economic growth in the Philippines has been raising the number of middle-class families but even so, in reality, a lot of Filipinos are still suffering from continuing poverty. A fact that Filipinos living the above average life are also very aware of it.

Because of this factor, the Filipinos don't try to think that love can be measured with money alone, whereas the Japanese tend to think of love in more materialistic ways.

Sometimes, such a thinking makes it difficult for the Japanese, especially men, to put all of their hearts into romantic relationships.

For instance concern like,  "what if I can't buy things my girlfriend wants? "It's not worth using money for my girlfriend", all of which keeps them from dating with someone else.

I think that that is the difference between a developing country and developed one.

"Love or Money", these are always brought up for discussion and have never been solved. If we say love is more important than money, it sounds like we are hypocrites.

And if we say money is more important than love , it sounds like we are gold diggers.
Consequently, maybe both are important for us.
